Site archéologique de Montamar

Historic site and monument, Archaeological site in Saint-yrieix-le-dejalat
  • Situated on a steep site overlooking a meander of the Corrèze river, this stronghold was built in the late 13th or early 14th century, north-east of Saint-Yrieix-le-Déjalat by the lords of Saint-Yrieix. Its purpose was to guard the valley road between Bonnefond and Saint-Augustin, and it was defended on one side by the river and on the other by semi-circular ditches lined with palisaded ramparts. Less than a century after its construction, the stronghold was abandoned.
